How many religious cults do you know? Why do people join them?

February 202010

First of all, there are the Destructive Cults: Aum Shinrikyo, People’s Temple, The Manson Family, Heaven’s Gate, Order of the Solar Temple, Movement for the Restoration of the 10 Commandments.
NOW, the cults themselves: (there’s actually 101 cults. I won’t name them all. The cults: Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormonism, Christian Science, The Farm, Spiritalism, Way International, The Raelians, Christadelphianism, Shephard’s Chapel, Universalism, Islam, New Age Movement, Oneness Pentecosta, 7th Day Aventism, Unification Church. The Moonies, Unity School of Christianity, Theosophy, Eckankar, Swedenborgianism, International Church of Christ/Boston, Christianity Family Fellowship Ministry, and, Christian Identity Movement (British Israelism).
Can you come up with any other ones? Which ones do you think have such stupid belief? Which is the oldest religion known to mankind that may be worst than all those put together?
Cults are condemned in the Bible. See Lev. 20; Deut. 18; and Acts 16 to name a few. Any other ones?

    Islam isn’t a cult – it’s a legitimate religion.

And Jehovahs Witness is too big to be a cult.

And you haven’t even scratched the surface of the cult numbers – there are over 1,000 militias in the US, each with its own cult following.

The word cult nowadays connotes fanaticism and extremism, but not too long ago, roughly from the eighteenth century to nearly modern times, the word cult simply meant less-known sect, or sometimes esoteric group. You might need to check up on your history of religion a little bit [actually a lot].

Christianity has roots in the gnostic cult.

Addendum: Leo, are you forgetting the christian heritage or just overlooking it? One of the earliest recorded schisms in christianity was between the Gnostics and Pistics. Originally, the pistics were the heretics. They erased and rewrote history once they were recognized by the first catholic church and the Roman government.

Gnosticism is not "officially" recognized by the church. Historically it was a dumping ground for heretics since Constantine wanted complete power and gnosticism questioned authority while the pistics did not. The "catholic" church under Constantine accepted pistic doctrine over gnostic. This church was only christian in name. Early gnostics and christians were pacifists and anarchists. They were disgusted by Constantine’s rule with an iron fist.

You have to be blind to not recognize the influence of the gnostics on christianity. It can be seen in your gospels of John, Thomas, Philip, and Mary.

    Fundamentalist Christianity
    Born-Again Christianity
    Evangelical Christianity
    Protestant Christianity
    Baptist Christianity
    Catholic Christianity
    "Non-denominational" Christianity
    Pentacostal Christianity
    Methodist Christianity
    Seventh Day Adventist Christianity
Edit: Forgot to add the "Jews for Jesus" cult

So I guess Christianity in general because it requires worship of a human (Jesus) and its followers throughout history have committed the most violent acts "in God’s name" and persecute the most. Plus they worship the Bible and again the human male Jesus more than they actually do God.

Oh, and FYI, New Age isn’t a cult. Read the definition of the actual word "cult" and you’ll find Christianity as we know it today pretty much defines the entire definition.

They seem like cults to me, and to Michael, the Gnostics are rejected by Christians, and the Gnostic doctrine is NOTHING like the Christian doctrine. The Gnostics actually don’t go around preaching and condemning. Its more of a "solitary" thing for those who aren’t templars actually.

    Why do people join them?

    2Ti 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
2Ti 4:4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

In truth any religion that makes a person become a better person is not a bad thing. However I truly feel sorry for those who do not believe in Jesus Christ. The Church of Jesus Christ L.D.S. (Mormon) you have branded as a cult is the true church on earth today, that is it is the only church that has direct power and authority from Christ himself, so if to follow Christ is a cult I am okay with that.
