Why does Christ really take hold in some people’s lives, but not in others?

February 182010

I have a good friend who is a born again Christian. He’s totally into the whole church thing. Has been for years, something has definitely changed in his life. Using myself as an example because its all I know… I around the same time asked Christ to enter my life. I repented and accepted him as my savior. The whole nine, and nothing really happened. Some say I wasn’t sincere, etc. But I was. I didn’t feel any different. I admitedly never went to church, but shouldn’t the Holy Spirit enter your body regardless of whether you go to church, etc.? Otherwise couldn’t we say its the church that changed my friend – the fellowship, etc. and not Christ? I understand you have to put in the work, but it just seems like for some of us we don’t get that passion. There is still some doubt in my mind I will admit that. But I just feel like God doesn’t want me.

You need to go to church so you can be brainwashed.

Read about the parable of the sower… And try to think what you want in your relationship with Christ. Too many people pray the prayer thinking that’s all and it’s an eternal life insurance policy.

The prayer only starts the process. You have to keep going at it everyday. God knows I’m still working on it–or He’s working on me still! :-)

And don’t worry… God still wants you. :-)

It all depends on the soil. Look up the parable of the sower Matthew 13:18 – 23. God bless

Repentance and acceptance of Christ is not the Bible way to be saved. The Biblical way is to confess Christ as your Lord, based on your belief in Him. Perhaps you never turned your life over to Him if what you say is correct so you may not be born again, and the Spirit of God may not have entered you and you may not be saved. Paul says "examine yourself to see if you are in the faith."

Actually, going to Church isn’t the reason.
And it also depends on what Church.

You need to give praise to God, its not Church all the time.

Maybe God wasn’t happy with other things you were doing.

I was "saved" three times, stayed in prayer and wanted desperately to see God in my life. I really believe that God is in the mind, it is an idea that not every can embrace no matter how hard they try.

If God were real, genuine seekers would find it. The human mind can make something out of nothing with little effort, a real God however would need no effort to be recognized.

ohh I’m sorry your feeling that way. It’s human nature to have doubts, ask the Lord to search your heart… he will, but are you listening??? If i may suggest two books that really helped me in my walk with the Lord..One was the Purpose Driven life" by Pastor Rick Warren. It really helped me find my passion in life, and with that passion came an incredible, deep connection with not only God but with My brothers and sisters in Christ. The other book , was More of a work book that goes along with a series we did at Church called S.H.A.P.E., it about finding God’s calling and building your God given talents.

After accepting Jesus into your heart were you baptized?? I know that my connection to him before i was baptized was awesome, but something about full immersion baptism for me was when i felt the Holy Spirit really enter into my life…and it’s been that way ever since.

God does want you to have fellowship with others, it’s once of the reasons he created us, so I would find a church you like and dedicate yourself to going more often and getting involved! Good Luck!

I KNOW what you are saying. But when we ask God to come into our hearts and save us are we sincere? Do we want it more than taking our next breath? do you want him more than your next day. you have to be desperate and mean every word of it. I have been there. I have been where you are. But when God changes us we have a burning desire to go to church, read the bible, and have fellowship with other believers. Do not go on feeling alone. go on the word of God. HE said if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart then God will has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Do you believe the bible? then do just that and believe. Do not go on feelings alone.
God bless you friend. He wants you more than you want HIM!!

The key is obedience. I lived for many years just as you describe and constantly wondered whether I was really saved. There was no evidence of Christ being in my life.

Then I began to really read God’s Word and live like it said, even though it was often difficult. And that’s when my life began to change. I began to truly enjoy being around other believers and found myself at church or doing other things with them just because I wanted to be around them. I began to crave reading the Bible because I wanted to know the God Who wrote it.

As someone else said, you should examine yourself to see whether you are in the faith. Scripture says a believer is known by the fruit in his life – his love for others, particularly other believers, and his love for the Lord borne out in his obedience to the Bible’s teachings.

My friend, commit yourself to reading God’s Word and obeying it. Then see what happens. I can promise you that it will truly transform your life. God bless you!

It sounds a bit as though you might feel a little unworthy as well as doubtful. It is an act of surrender to the Lord as well as receiving the incredible love that He has for you! Sweety, why would Christ not want you? Please pray for understanding about these feelings. Let the Lord heal you and make you whole. He loves you so very, very much! He gives you the gift freely – there is no charge. He is just waiting for you.

Amen and I agree. I empathize and sympathize. I have always been told Jesus waits; He says knock (Matt 7:7)and it shall be open to you, seek and you shall find. Father God says (2 Chron 7:14) "seek my face." Timothy says: (2ndTimothy 2:15)"study to show thy self approved a Workman" Paul says:(Phil 2:12) "work out your salvation" (Phil1:27) strive together for the faith, (1Timothy 6:12)fight the good fight" Lastly, (Proverbs 3:5&6)Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
I guess this was for you …I just typed and typed.

Thats exactly like me. My mother is like your friend – very very religious. I was like you. Like one answer said above – The key is obedience.

I refused to be a mindless drone and just accept everything I was told. Every time I asked a question, or made a comment that seemed logical to me, I was told that I was wrong, and that I was bordering on heresy. I am an intelligent person. A very curious person. And also a sceptical person.
I did the prayer thing when I was 9 – nothing happened – and 10 years later I quit the church. I have never been happier since I quit. The second best decision I ever made – the first was of course getting married.
