Christians: What is the purpose of the church ?

April 152010

There are many Christians that make church out to be a place of worship, sacred reverence and fellowship like it should be along with hearing the preached word of God. I believe its a place to grow with other fellow believers rather than grow alone. However there are other Christians that do not go to church and they watch it on television or do their own devotions without going to church. Christians in your opinion, what is the purpose of going to church? Feel free to provide any biblical references.

You are exactly right Stranger. Church is a building for fellowship which comes from the Old Covenant or Old Testament. Christianity changed when Jesus came to Earth bringing Christians the New Covenant to live by or the New Testament. Church can be you body (Earthly vessel) referred to as a temple in the Bible. Church is and should be a place of worship and sacred reverence and fellowship to hear the Word spread. And if the Word you’re hearing from your pulpit is not creating togetherness, tolerance, love and forgiveness then perhaps you should be searching for another Church. Because whether you believe Jesus Christ or not, those are the things that he came to Earth to teach.

Is there a church in north Cincinnati area that teaches the Bible?

April 132010

Our family is praying to find a church in or around Butler County Ohio that teaches the Bible without compromise – and IS NOT "seeker sensitive" or "Emergent". We are beginning to wonder if there is a Christian fellowship that hungers for God’s Word and not entertainment. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Here’s a FULL gosple church in Cincinnati:

From the Heart Church‎
715 Fleming Road, Cincinnati, OH 45231-3905
(513) 531-5433‎

Here’s another one (not sure if it’s close):

Full Gospel
2117 Eaton Road
Hamilton, OH 45013-9737
(513) 737-2401

I need this passage explained to me?

April 132010

This is quoted

"Notice your church

Here are six important statements about wealth from the Bible:

Matthew 6:19

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Luke 14:33

Any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.

Matthew 6:24

No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and Money.

Matthew 19:21

Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."

Hebrews 13:5

Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you."

Phil 2:3

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.

Acts 2:44-45

All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need.

Now, the next time you go to church, look at the building. At any "normal" church in America, the church building is an immense structure worth significant amounts of money. Here is a typical church in Raleigh, NC:

Colonial Baptist Church

The church’s web site has this to say: "In May of 1993 the church fellowship voted unanimously to relocate our church campus. As a result of God’s gracious plan, our Tryon site almost immediately became inadequate to facilitate our growing numbers. Thus, the church body once again demonstrated its pioneering spirit, faith and vision—vision to be a church not only blessed with a wonderful past, but faith and trust in God for an enduring, effective future. As of May 21, 1996, we became the owners of 33 acres on which to build our new facilities. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!" This church has soccer fields, indoor basketball courts, dozens of meeting rooms and classrooms, several buses, a library, a huge sanctuary and ample free parking.

[One obvious question to ask after reading the church's statement is this: If all blessings flow from God, then why are his blessings so amazingly unbalanced? Why are tens of thousands of children dying of starvation every day on this planet [ref], while Colonial Baptist Church is blessed with such wealth? Why wouldn’t God spread his blessings evenly among all his children? Answer: Because God is imaginary.]

If you look at this article you see this description of the Catholic Church: "The Vatican’s treasure of solid gold has been estimated by the United Nations World Magazine to amount to several billion dollars. A large bulk of this is stored in gold ingots with the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank, while banks in England and Switzerland hold the rest. But this is just a small portion of the wealth of the Vatican, which in the U.S. alone, is greater than that of the five wealthiest giant corporations of the country. When to that is added all the real estate, property, stocks and shares abroad, then the staggering accumulation of the wealth of the Catholic church becomes so formidable as to defy any rational assessment."

The contradiction is startling. No where in Jesus’ teachings is it suggested that Christians should buy land and build church buildings with indoor basketball courts. No where does Jesus suggest the accumulation of billions of dollars in gold bars. Chistians are supposed to sell everything and give the money to the poor, according to Jesus. Yet church congregations do exactly the opposite on a regular basis. Building a large sanctuary and indoor basketball courts is an exercise in vanity, ego-boosting, selfishness and human pride. These attributes are the opposite of Jesus’ prescriptions and everyone knows it.

Church congregations regularly and willfully ignore Jesus’ teachings because they know that Jesus is imaginary. "

I didn’t read the whole thing. The biblical quotes I read. real treasure is the love and contentment that God puts into your heart. Religious leaders are always suspect in my eyes. What type of person tries to exalt themselve over others? A real holy man would be too humble to profess himself as a leader.

I’m scared to NOT become a Christian…?

April 132010

I have been studying a lot of religions and I like Buddhism the best so far. I was raised in a Christian area and everyone says I will go to Hell if I choose Buddhism.

After much prayer and seeking and scripture reading, I have absolutely no desire to become a Christian. Am I to understand that God wants me to become a Christian even against my better judgment? That just does not sound right at all!

I simply do not find it logical to believe the things Christianity says I must believe!

people say I must, read the Bible in faith, and that i must pray believing, and pray for the Holy Spirit and wait…

To also attend a "good Christian Church" and fellowship with believers, etc, But I did all that for over a year and I honestly felt like these people were trying to brainwash me.

I have a hunger for God and am a very moral and humble person, but Christianity simply does not feel right.

Buddhism feels right and a lot of atheists have some really good points also.

All of us, as humans, mess up. The Church is supposed to represent God, but it is not perfect. We can all be hypocrites and go against what God wants at times.

To go to a "good Christian Church", fellowship, give, and serve is great and God wants us to do it to bring glory to Him. However, it’s not what saves you. You won’t grow close to Him by going through the empty motions. To do that is meaningless.

People you have talked to are right in that the Holy Spirit will work in you. If you have true faith and want to know God, He will answer.

When God created the world, it was perfect. When Adam and Eve sinned, sin entered the world. To sin is to go against what God wants, and we are all guilty. The punishment for sin is death and eternal seperation from God in Hell. The Jews would offer sacrifices to attone for the sins they had committed, but an animal could never make up for it. A perfect sacrifice was required. They anxiously waited for a Messiah to come, a savior that would rescue them from sin. After hundreds of years of waiting, a miracle occurred! A virgin gave birth to a boy, whose name was Jesus. He was the son of God, but was also God Himself, come to live among us. After walking the earth for about thirty years, He was sent to die on a cross for claiming to be God. When He was on the cross, He took all of our sins upon Him and became our perfect sacrifice! However, it seemed as if death had beaten Jesus. His followers were dejected. Was Jesus a liar?

But three days later, the stone was rolled away from the tomb He was in. When His followers went to see, there was nobody in the tomb! Jesus had conquered the grave and risen from the dead! He walked and talked with hundreds of people before ascending into heaven to sit at the right hand of God.

Now, by believing in Him, we can live eternally with Him in heaven. We are no longer guilty, because Jesus paid the price for our sins. It’s a free gift, and we can’t ever do anything by ourselves! We simply need to believe in God, that He died and rose again because of His love for us. He didn’t want us to be separated from Him, so he gives us a choice. We can accept His gift and live for God, to bring Him glory, or we can reject Him and live for ourselves. One choice leads to heaven, the other to hell. One to a fulfilling, wonderful life with God to guide us, the other to disappointment, hate, and no purpose.

Many people simply say, "believe in God or you’re going to Hell!" However, they leave out most of the story- God’s glory, love and power!

Christian Church – Part 1

April 132010

Many times people want to know about the relationship between the church of Christ and the Christian church. I spent a long time on the air with this caller from the Christian church explaining why we, the Danville church of Christ, do not extent fellowship to the Christian church. The issue of mechanical instruments of music is simply one manifestation of the real root of the problem, disregard for biblical authority.
